Dear (future) Rotman Commerce Student,

Hi, my name is Kai and I’m in my third year at Rotman Commerce. I can understand the stress and excitement that you’re feeling right now. Let me tell you a little bit about myself and my advice for picking your program of study.

I was born near Shanghai and immigrated to Toronto at the age of 5. In my spare time, I enjoy watching the NBA, writing novels, and trying new restaurants. I have experience in Rotman extra-curricular events with involvement in the Rotman Commerce Marketing Association, Rotman Commerce Consulting Association, and FLC. Since U of T is such a big school, I make sure to branch out to other facets of the U of T community as well. One of the ways I do this is by representing my College in the Political Science Association. As a Rotman Commerce student, I have also gained a wide range of experience in both the corporate world (Procter & Gamble) and start-ups (Innovate South Africa).

When picking your specialization at the end of first year, my best advice is to pick a program of study that you have passion for. Pick your program based on your own interests and strengths, rather than basing the decision on external pressures. You will be much more successful in your career if you are passionate about what you do.  To make your university choice, go on campus tours, talk to students (like me), and get a feel for what student life is like. I personally picked Rotman because of its location; I wanted to be close to the activities of downtown Toronto!

In general, university is a lot of fun! Best of luck in whatever decision you make.

Regards,

Kai
